AMS – The Detroit Rocks Project

The world knows about the rich musical history of Detroit, Michigan, and the legendary artists it has produced, but what is it that makes The Motor City unique when it comes to Rock & Roll? Everyone knows the names Bob Seger, Ted Nugent, The MC5, The Stooges, The Romantics, Kid Rock, etc., but what made these acts so different, so special, so quintessentially “Detroit”?

The Detroit music scene is a vibrant stew of musical influences, and when an act rises up from the trenches here to become known worldwide, they are taking those influences with them. The Detroit experience is unique because the bands here inspire and influence each other as much or more than they are influenced by the Rock & Roll standard-bearers of the world. For every kid in Detroit who was inspired by Led Zeppelin or Guns & Roses, there were dozens more whose heroes included bands like Adrenalin, Mugsy, Seduce, The Almighty Strut, Halloween, and more recently, The Shram Band, Overloaded, Pistol Day Parade, and so many others who are little-known outside of southeastern lower Michigan.

Detroit Rocks is a documentary which will focus not on history, but on the influences that live and grow in the here and now, as they are passed from generation to generation of young up-and-coming musicians. This is not the story of this band or that band, it is the story of how players in Detroit were affected by the bands that they saw in their own hometown, and how these influences can be heard in the music being made today in Detroit and beyond. It is the story of Detroit rock & roll told in the voices of the players who have made Detroit “Rock City”.

Detroit Rocks will feature interviews with prominent Detroit rockers from the late sixties to today, and live concert footage of currently active artists covering songs from their Detroit influences. In addition, the producers have recorded a “Band Aid” style theme song featuring dozens of well-known Motor City musicians, and are organizing a concert starring the available participants, to benefit charitable organizations aiding those in the Detroit area who are struggling due to the economic downturn, and recent changes in the struggling auto industry. (See the “All-Star Theme Song & Benefit Concert” page for more info).

Mitch Ryder, Wayne Kramer, The Stooges, The Silver Bullet Band, Twisted Brown Trucker, Grand Funk Railroad, Alice Cooper Band, Insane Clown Posse, White Stripes, Amboy Dukes, Destroy All Monsters, Toby Redd, Adrenalin, DC Drive, Bitter Sweet Alley, Rhythm Corp, DC Hawks, Feisty Cadavers, Barooga Bandit, 3D Invivisbles, Detroit Cobras, Suicide Machines, The Von Bondies, Critical Bill, Ashes of Soma, Electric Six, Negative Approach, Ray Street Park, Ugly But Proud & Elvis Hitler. Grand Funk Railroad – Inside Looking Out 1969

http://www.petitiononline.com/GFRMDM/petition.html
Grand Funk Railroad performing “Inside Looking Out” live from 1969. This clip was shot at “The Show” WITF-TV in Hershey, Pa. November 1969. Mark & Don were 20 & Mel 18 years old. This clip is timeless. I’ve had hundreds of personal messages from people of 4 generations worldwide that are in awe of this powerful performance. (Folks from 11 to 83 years of age.) I’ve been told it’s early “METAL”, to the original “GRUNGE”, to the real begining of “PUNK”, to the first “GARAGE BAND”, to pure “TRIBAL ROCK”, to “INDUSTIAL STRENGTH ROCK.” One thing’s for sure, it is powerful, passionate, singular, & unique. Mark, Don, & Mel changed music forever with 10 minute Power Songs like this one. This is the ULTIMATE POWER TRIO. Grand Funk Railroad was truly a “Performance Vehicle”. What you heard on the albums could be duplicated 100% on their live performances. Many would say it’s impossible for a 3 piece band to do this live. See the impossible. Once you start watching it, it’s hard not to finish it. This is the most popular GFRxR video on the Web. 032911 Carl Lundgren Artshow-Belmont Detroit, MI

On Tuesday March 29thh I had the opportunity and privilege to go to a
Carl Lundgren Art show at the Belmont in Detroit.

The Belmont

1st time at the Belmont. Surprisingly a lot of people came out for a Tuesday night.

As the art show was going on, Carl’s daughter. Cara Lundgren took the stage without her band, but more of a karaoke style singing Fleetwood Mac tunes.

Found Cara’s biggest fan. This guy was really, really jammin to everything and I just had to get a pic of this shirt. Found out she got it from Noir Leather in Royal Oak.

Then the next band hit the stage. I think their name was, Prescious Few. They were fast Rock, Not speed metal, but not your ordinary Rock band. They were pretty good and put on a good show.

While waiting and hoping for Carl to take the stage, took a few more shots. This guy was fascinated with Carl’s Monkeys. Yeh sounds weird, but true and Cara and her Mom pose for a shot for someone else’s camera.

It took some convincing, but finally with the help of Cara. We, more like she. Convinced her Dad to take the stage for a acoustic version of house of the rising sun, Originally from the Animals in 1964. It was the very first time Carl has been on stage in 40 years and the very first time he ever played with his daughter.

So all in all, Great night. I was able to hang with the Lundgren family, witnessed history in the making and was able to take pics of the event so it will never be forgotten. I just wish I had a real video camera with me, although I was able to take a little video with my still camera. That will coming soon. You can either subscribe to the emails or just keep checking. Also on 040211, I went to the Russell Industrial Center’s open house and later that night, out to Clarkston to see Fleetwoods Back.

Pictures and videos coming soon. Have a nice day. Please share.
